Goals are the specific, measurable objectives you set for yourself. They give you a concrete target and a sense of direction. For example, you might set a goal to run a 5K, save a certain amount of money, or get a promotion at work.
Motives are the emotional or psychological reasons behind your goals. They represent your why—the deeper needs, values, or desires that drive you to pursue a particular outcome. For example, the goal of running a 5K might be motivated by a desire to feel healthier, prove something to yourself, or reduce stress.
Goals are the what, and motives are the why. When your goals and motives align, you’re more likely to feel motivated, fulfilled, and satisfied. However, when they don’t match, it can feel downright impossible to maintain the motivation required to achieve a goal—or even to feel good when you do.
When your goals reflect your true desires and values, you’re more likely to stay motivated and experience genuine satisfaction along the way. Here are some steps to help you uncover your deeper “why” and set goals that truly resonate with who you are.
Take time to dig deeper into your why. Ask yourself questions like:
Align your goals with your core values and priorities. For instance, if your value is health, your goal might involve daily habits like mindful eating or regular movement, rather than focusing solely on a number on a scale.
Choose goals that excite and energize you. If the process of working toward a goal feels like a chore, it’s worth reevaluating whether it’s aligned with your motives.
Your motives and priorities may evolve over time, and that’s okay. Regularly reassess your goals to ensure they still resonate with your values and reflect your current needs.
